Ford Fathom’s $28K version won’t get the 300-mile battery

A new report says the cheapest Fathom won't get the bigger battery, which changes how you should read all those "affordable and long-range" headlines.

The Headlines Have Been Overselling It

I've had a few people ask me about the Fathom lately, Ford's upcoming electric pickup. Every headline seems to pair the same two numbers: $28,000 starting price and 300 miles of range. Sounds like a home run. Except a new report is clarifying something important - you don't get both at the same time.

What's Actually Going On

The base $28K Fathom will not come with the larger battery pack that gets you around 300 miles of range. That's reserved for a higher trim. So the truck making headlines for being cheap isn't the same truck making headlines for going far.

This isn't unusual. It's basically how Ford is going to separate the Fathom lineup.

Battery capacity looks like it's shaping up to be one of the main ways Ford splits the Fathom trims apart and manages cost.

That's a pretty standard EV playbook at this point. Smaller battery, lower price, shorter range. Bigger battery, higher price, longer range. Ford's just applying it to a truck that's gotten a lot of buzz for undercutting the market.

Why This Matters If You're Considering One

If range is the reason you want a Fathom - job site distance, towing, just not wanting to think about charging - don't assume the entry price gets you there. You'll likely be looking at a step up in trim to get the battery that actually delivers close to 300 miles.

None of this makes the Fathom a bad truck. It just means the price and the range you've been seeing quoted together probably won't show up on the same window sticker. Worth knowing before you get your heart set on a number.
